Abstract


VALUE PRE FEREN CES OF CAN DIDATE TEA CHER S
The primary aim of this study is to determine teacher candidates’ value preferences and identify whether these preferences differ based on various variables. The study is in the form of screening model. It has two main variables, one as the dependent, and the other as the independent. Teacher candidates’ major, gender, parents’ educational background, place of living constitute the independent variables and the values (i.e. evaluation and balance, struggling for the life after this, the world without lies, being purified from sins, economical freedom, comfortable life, knowing the truths; peaceful conscience, a world without ignorance, a world with beauties, maintaining equality, real friendship, fight for freedom, helping people) the dependent variables. The population of the study is 7819 teacher candidates studying at Buca Faculty of Education, Dokuz Eylul University in the 2011 academic year. 910 teacher candidates selected using stratified sampling constitute the sample of the study. To determine the students’ value preferences, Values Inventory (Gungor, 1998) was used. The students’ views on values were described without any changes. The results of the study revealed that the students mostly preferred the value of “peaceful conscience”. The least preferred ones were knowing the truths and a comfortable life. The teacher candidates’ value preferences did not show a meaningful difference according to their major. However, according to the gender variable, there was a meaningful difference in the values of “evaluation and balance, struggling for the life after this, knowing the truths, peaceful conscience, fight for freedom”. Based on their fathers’ educational background, there was again a meaningful difference in the values “struggling for the life after this, being purified from sins, comfortable life”. Similarly, the place of living also showed a meaningful difference in the values “comfortable life, fight for freedom”
