A Stylistic Approach to Thomas Campion’s "There Is a Garden in Her Face"

Özet
Edebi eserler, yazarların dilin birimlerini belirli bir biçimde kullanmalarıyla ortaya çıkar. Biçem, bir dildeki tüm olasılıklardan dilsel özelliklerin seçilmesi olarak görülür. Biçembilim, bir okuyucunun bir metni okurken onu nasıl anladığını ve ondan nasıl etkilendiğini açıklığa kavuşturmak için okuyucuların edebi bir metnin diliyle etkileşimini yaratmaya çalışır. Bu çalışma Thomas Campion’un “Yüzü Bir Gül Bahçesi” adlı eserini biçembilimsel özellikleri açısından inceler. Şiirdeki üç kıta dilbilgisi açısından birbirine paraleldir ve yüzü cennet bahçesine benzetilen bir kadının güzelliğini konu alır. Grafolojik sapma, şiirdeki önemli kelimeleri ön plana çıkarmak için büyük bir harf sistemini gösterir. Güzel bir kadının dudaklarını anlatan nakarat, şiirin bütünlüğünü sağlar. ‘Olgun kiraz’ tekrarı, cinsel olgunluğa işaret eder. Fonetik paralellik, paralel anlam sistemini pekiştirir. Şiir, bahçede yetişen çiçek ve meyvelerin tasvirini daha canlı kılmak için daha çok teşbih ve mecazlara dayanmaktadır. Bununla kadının fiziksel özellikleri, kişiliği ve ruhu tasvir edilir. Kiraz ismi, kutsal sıfatı ile birlikte kullanılarak kadının dudaklarının cennetteki yasak meyvelere benzetilmesini tasvir eder. Her kıtanın sonunda tekrarlanan aynı mısra, bu güzel kadının izin vermedikçe ulaşılamaz olduğunu ön plana çıkarır. Bu kadın, konuşmacının onu tasvir ettiği kadar kutsal ve mükemmel olamaz, bu da bu şiirin gergin ve yanlış hissettirmesine neden olur. Bu şiirdeki kadın, konuşmacının yarattığı imaja asla gerçekten ulaşamaz. Bu çalışma, şiirin anlamını ve etkisini göstermek için biçemsel özelliklerinin nasıl temel olarak kullanıldığını gösterir.

Abstract
Literary works come into existence through authors’ use of language units in particular ways. Style is considered as the choice of linguistic characteristics from all the probabilities in language. Stylistics attempts to create an interaction of readers with the language of a literary text to clarify how a reader understands the text and is affected by it while reading it. This study analyses Thomas Campion’s “There Is a Garden in Her Face” using stylistic features. All three stanzas in the poem are grammatically parallel to each other and deal with the lady’s beauty whose face is compared to the garden of paradise. The graphological deviation shows a system of capitalization to foreground important words in the poem. The unity of the poem is secured by the refrain describing a beautiful lady’s lips. The repetition of ‘cherry ripe’ refers to sexual maturity. The phonetic parallelism reinforces the system of parallel meaning. The poem is based mostly on similes and metaphors to make the imagery of the flowers and fruit growing in a garden much more vivid. With this, the lady’s physical features, her personality, and her spirit are portrayed. The noun cherry is used with the adjective sacred which portrays that the lady’s lips are compared to the forbidden fruits in heaven. The same line which is repeated at the end of each stanza foregrounds that this beautiful lady is unattainable unless if she permits it. This lady cannot be as divine and perfect as the speaker portrays her to be, which makes this poem feel tense and wrong. The lady in this poem could never really achieve the image created by the speaker. This study shows how stylistic features are used as the basis for inferring the poem’s meaning and effect.
