Abstract
While trying to understand the situation of a profession in terms of genders -in our example, this profession is musicianship- only going through gender will leave the professional side of the subject incomplete. Therefore, in order to understand "miss orchestras", which we can consider as a different aspect of musicianship, it is necessary to look at the gender-based division of labour. According to Bourdieu (2015), while society divides the spaces into two as masculine / feminine, it also divides the professions into two, namely female professions / masculine professions, and reproduces it continuously. The gender-based division of labor, which manifests itself differently in different societies, is also valid in music. Accordingly, in some societies, musicianship is seen as a male profession, while in others it is seen as a profession performed by women. This situation is undoubtedly related to gender roles in the studied society. In order to understand this better, it is necessary to understand the discussions on the concept of gender-based division of labor and what this concept is. 'Miss orchestras' have just become widespread today. The transfer of henna nights to wedding halls plays an important role in the emergence of 'miss orchestras' demanded in women only entertainments. It is also important that individuals who demand "female orchestras" describe themselves as "traditional" or "conservative". The 'miss orchestra' profession will be tried to be understood through the concepts of gender and gender-based division of labor. The biggest limitation of the study is that the researcher is male. For this reason, the researcher could not have the chance to make observations at henna nights, but this situation was tried to be overcome by asking the interviewers to describe the entertainment. Another limitation is that, as Bourdieu (2015) states, the researcher is gendered with gender roles and codes, just like the individuals in the community studied. In this context, the size of the effort to be spent for the objectivity of the study has increased. The case study has not been analyzed from the critical perspective of feminist theories. Instead, the reasons that led to the practice in question were tried to be understood. The study consists of two parts. In the first part, the concepts of Gender and Gender-Based Division of Labor, which form the theoretical framework of the study; In the second part, DJ Cannur, who constitutes our "miss orchestra" practice and our case study, has been tried to be understood through these concepts.
