Abstract
Nathacha Appanah, Mauritian writer who is one of the important representatives of contemporary Francophone literature, generally deals with themes that reflect the complex and polyphonic world of our age, such as identity, culture, alienation, exile, immigration, and violence. His novel Tropique de la Violence, published in 2016, immerses the reader in the criminal world of extreme poverty in an area called Gaza on the Island of Mayot. In the work, which has a polyphonic narrative structure in which the themes of migration, violence and alienation are handled, five different narrators address the reader with their own consciousness. Appanah effectively uses elements to activate social and cultural memory of violence and migration through senses, objects and descriptions of universal space. In the novel, which also draws attention to the historical dimension of the concept of migration and immigrant, different semantic connotations of migration in social memory are included. The author's rich imagination finds its place in the poetic expression of the novel. Appanah shows the illusions in the perception of reality with this narrative universe that you set up with contrasts. The work also features an eco-critical approach to the environmental problem, which is one of the important problems of our age. In this study, in which I analyzed the novel within the framework of Bakhtin and Kristeva's theory of polyphony, I drew attention to the elements that provide polyphony in the text and the dialogic structure of the narrative. In addition, by examining how the themes of migration, identity, alienation and violence take place in the work at the narrative level, I discussed the type of violence within the framework of Galtung's personal, structural and cultural violence theory.
