Özet
Sultan II Abdülhamid, Batı kamuoyunda kendisi ve ülkesini küçük düşüren imajı tersine
çevirmek için 1890’lardan itibaren imaj düzeltme faaliyeti içine girdi. Osmanlı ülkesinin
modern bir ülke olduğunu, insanlarının da medeni olduklarını göstermeye çabaladı. Diğer
taraftan da kötü Osmanlı imajının kaynakları gazete tiyatro ve kitapları sansürleyerek veya
ülkeye girişlerini yasaklama yoluna gitti. Biz bu çalışmamızda Sultan’ın neden seyahat
kitaplarıyla ilgilendiği ve bazılarını yasakladığını irdeleyeceğiz. Yazı ilki imajını düzeltmeye
çalışan Sultan, ikincisi bu düzeltme işinde görevli tercümanlarından Ahmet Nermi ve
çevirilerinden oluşmaktadır.

Abstract
Sultan Abdülhamid II, in order to reverse the image which humiliated himself and his
country in the Western public opinion, went into the struggle for the activity of correcting
image beginning from 1890s. He strove to prove that Ottoman country was a modern country
and her people were civilized. Moreover, he resorted to censor the journals, plays and books
which were the sources of the nasty Ottoman image; or to prohibit the introduction of those
kind of publications to the country. We are going to investigate in this study why Sultan was
interested in the travel books and why he prohibited some of them. This article consists of
firstly the Sultan who was trying to correct his image and secondly, Ahmet Nermi, who was
in charge of the affair of correction, and his translations.
